How to Replace a Doorknob: A Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing a doorknob is a straightforward DIY project that can enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your interior doors. Whether you’re upgrading an old doorknob or simply want a fresh look, follow these steps to successfully replace it:

1.Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following items:

  • Phillips head screwdriver

  • New doorknob set (available at hardware stores)

2.Remove the Old Doorknob

Locate the Screws: If your doorknob has visible screws on the faceplate, use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen and remove them. Traditional doorknobs typically have two screws.

Latch Hole Method: If there are no visible screws, feel for a small indentation or hole on the stem attached to the knob. Push a paperclip or nail into the hole to disengage the knob.

Detach the Knob: Hold the door with one hand and pull the interior knob away from it. Wiggle it if necessary to remove it from the doorknob stem.

Remove the Faceplate: Some doorknobs have a faceplate covering the screws. Pry it off using a flathead screwdriver or knife. Unscrew the revealed screws to detach the exterior knob.

3.Remove the Latch

Unscrew the Latch: Locate the two screws near the top and bottom of the latch. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove them.

Pull Out the Latch: Pry the latch plate from the side of the door using a flathead screwdriver. Remove the entire latch.

4. Install the New Latch

Choose the Correct Backset: Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the existing latch hole. Most residential doors have a standard 2⅜-inch or 2¾-inch backset.

Insert the New Latch: Slide the new latch into the hole, ensuring the correct backset. Secure it with the provided screws.

5. Install the New Doorknob

Attach the Interior Knob: Align the screw posts on the interior knob with the latch mechanism. Tighten the screws to secure it in place.

Attach the Exterior Knob: If the latch plate is covered in paint, remove it first. Then, attach the exterior knob by pulling it through the door and securing it.

Install the Faceplate and Strike Plate: Screw the faceplate back onto the door. Also, attach the strike plate to the door jamb.

6. Test the New Doorknob

Close the door and test the doorknob’s functionality. Ensure it latches properly and turns smoothly.
